Evelio Cigars
For 23 years, Evelio Oviedo was employed by the H. Upmann cigar company in Cuba. This served him well throughout his industry career, which included opening and running cigar factories in the Canary Islands and Brazil. A subsequent planned retirement in Miami was interrupted by Nestor Plascencia, who was experiencing production issues at one of his facilities in Honduras.
The move proved very beneficial because it led Evelio to create the cigar that bore his name. Nestor had a desire to create a cigar that reflected Cuban workmanship and quality. Evelio agreed to help Nestor set up the facility that would produce the cigars. The resulting full-bodied brand is creamy and smooth. Smokers notice hints of leather and oak, followed by spice that is pleasant and far from overwhelming.
Honduran and Nicaraguan tobaccos are used in the filler, the binder is Honduran, and a sweet Ecuadorian wrapper contains it all. Evelios have a quality and taste reminiscent of 1960s Cuban cigars, yet are available at a fraction of the price. Coronas, Double Coronas, #1s, Robustos, Robusto Largas, and Piramides each feature a natural wrapper. Smokers who buy cigars online can purchase a box of 25 of any size for about $55.
This brand proves that sometimes older is better and sticking with a good thing is wise. Being able to control every aspect of the production process to ensure duplication of the Cuban method of cigar making was something Evelio required. When Nestor granted him that authority, the journey began that resulted in this excellent cigar.
Evelio tried several times to move away from the cigar industry but we are glad he failed. Were it not for being called to Honduras, he never would have created the handmade long fillers that feature his name. For those who want the Cuban smoking experience without being thrown in jail, these are one of the best cigars to choose.
