Excalibur Cigars
Those who prefer a flavorful Honduran cigar usually love the Hoyo de Monterrey Excalibur brand. Excaliburs are medium to full-bodied and have a spicy and dry aroma. Fillers are made from Nicaraguan, Honduran, and Dominican tobacco and Connecticut binders and wrappers are used. Other lines in this brand are the 1066 and Legend.
Hoyo de Monterrey has its roots in 19th century Cuba and is one of the most recognized names in the industry. When production relocated to Honduras in 1969, quality and flavor did not suffer. Excaliburs are currently rolled in the Villizon Factory under the watchful eye of master cigar maker Estello Padron. They are considered a fuller body blend from Hoyo de Monterrey.
Only the top ten percent of Honduran and Nicaraguan tobacco crops are used in the Excalibur brand. Cultivation and fermentation has not changed since the days in Cuba. The result is a hearty aroma with a finish that is spicy and dry. Each of the 11 Excalibur sizes features the traditional allure of Cuban cigars.
A Cameroon wrapper is used to make the 1066 line. Filler and binder are the same as the regular Excalibur line. This full-bodied cigar comes in seven sizes sold in stained wooden boxes of 20 online. Legend, the newest line in the brand, is a medium to full-bodied cigar featuring Dominican ligero and Nicaraguan tobacco. A Connecticut binder and wrapper are used to create an assortment of flavors ranging from wood to leather, with a peppery finish.
Legends come in three sizes: the 5.25-inch, 50 ring Challenger, the 5.75-inch, 45 ring Crusader, and the Conqueror, which is 6.25 inches long and features a 54 ring. A box of 20 with natural wrappers costs about $135 for the Crusader and Challenger and $150 for the Conqueror. In the regular and 1066 lines, Maduro wrappers are available for some sizes.
