How To Keep Your Cigars Fresh
Some cigars contain tobacco that does not include preservatives. This makes it necessary to store them in a way that keeps them fresh for a long time. There are different ways to keep cigars fresh, the best one being a humidity-controlling box called a humidor. Tabletop humidors hold a nice-sized collection and cost as little as $25.
An airtight container like a humidor allows cigar tobacco to breathe. The internal humidification device enables the tobacco to remain moist through the process of evaporation. Consumers who choose a basic airtight container other than a humidor must allow for periodic air exchange and airflow through and over the tobacco. If a cigar is stored in an airtight container without humidity control, the tobacco could develop mold.
During storage, tobacco should be moist enough to remain fresh but not so moist as to be wet. Personal preference dictates the desired level of moisture. If tobacco has dried too much, moisture can be restored by laying out the tobacco in a thin layer and using distilled water to mist it until it reaches the desired level of moisture.
Storing cigars in the refrigerator is not recommended. The fridge serves as a dehumidifier, removing moisture from the tobacco. If stored in the freezer, ice crystals may form on the cigar, making it too wet to smoke. In both cases, the cigar may make the unit smell and no one wants all of their food to taste like tobacco.
Until cigars are smoked, they should be stored at room temperature, but no higher than 73 degrees Fahrenheit. Humidity level should be between 68 and 74 percent. This enables the cigar to be fresh and more enjoyable to smoke. If a cigar is stored outside a humidor, it may last up to two weeks, depending on climate, but should be kept in a sealed plastic bag.
